Welcome to Graphic Healing!
Writing is an outlet that allows one to delve into the complicated mind. There is a great amount of trauma that many suffer and it is often hard to understand feelings pertaining to trauma or illness. Writing it down on paper gives the writer a physical copy of the inner workings of ones mind and heart.
David B.’s Epileptic and David Small’s Stitches are two graphic memoirs that testify to making meaning of illness while also healing through finding this meaning. It is not so much the text that properly conveys their emotions but rather the panels that do most of the work. Both novels are filled with thought provoking illustrations that speak louder then words. Images in both novels are sincere and evoke immense emotion from readers. Epileptic and Stitches use illustration to communicate their hidden, unspoken feelings. This self-expressive medium of writing and illustration allow for both Small and David B. to make meaning out of their difficulties in order to heal the pain of their hardships.
