The Mystery of Memory
When the question what is preserved of your identity when memory loss encounters is a hard question to answer. Oliver Sacks and Alix Kate Schulman and myself have taken the stance of what we believe that identity is preserved in a way. We can agree that when memories are lost in patients their is a slim possibility they will be able to retain them again. The way they preserve their identity is although they might not be able to remember what they once have done but their skills have not been lost such as shown in Sacks article The Abyss. Its hard to answer this question giving a concrete statement because each case of a patient is different.
